Long Island Water Sentinels Year End Report - November 25, 2009

This quarter the Long Water Sentinels added four test kits, restocked three test kits, and will soon be receiving supplies for an eighth test kit. We have also requested nets for tributary cleanups.

In charge of our test kits in the field are:

Captain Janine Bendicksen of the Sweetbriar Nature Center and the Kings Park High School students, testing the North Shore's Nissiquogue River.

Captain Joe Aurelio, testing Greens Creek on the South Shore.

Captains Al Walker and Diane Ives, testing three tributaries in Amityville.

Recent additions to the Sentinels:

Captain Charles Belvington of the North Shore Property Owners Association, testing the Long Island Sound at Rocky Point with the Boy Scouts.

Captain and Sentinels coordinator Linda Freilich, testing the Patchogue River on the South Shore with students from the Bellport Academic Center.

Captain William Stegemann, testing the Carlis River in Babylon on the South Shore with Jack Finkenberg.

Captain Kelli Hughes, testing the Carmens River in Yaphank with Linda Freilich and the Girl Scouts on the South Shore.

In total, six out of eight Water Sentinel teams are actively testing with students or scout troops.

We continue to work with local groups and local governments:

ABCO, the Brookhaven Town Civic Association requested that we test the Carmens in order to inform the debate about a huge development at the Carmens' headwaters. We are testing the Carmens. The Mayor of Patchogue requested that we test the Patchogue for resuts to follow the upgrading of his sewage treatment plant. We are testing the Patchogue River. The Mayor and the Sierra Club will be awarding certificates of service to participating students at a local school on awards day at the end of the school year.

Sentinels in the news:

Eastern Suffolk BOCES, an educational institution which employs 2000 employees in Suffolk County, is writing an article on us in the publication Highlights which will go out to 52 school districts in Suffolk County. The Long Island Advance called Sentinels coordinator Linda Freilich for water quality test results because legislatures want to understand how to vote on a development that is planned for the headwaters of the Carmens, one of the tributaries is in our data. Janine Bendicksen and her students were written up for testing on Long Island Sound Day twice. Long Island Boating Times (www.boatingtimesli.com) August issue included a short blurb and picture on the LI Water Sentinels and our work with students. Suffolk County News did a feature article on us in January 2009 when we were starting out.

Two fundraisers are planned:

In January we will hold a dance party called Stingers singles- $25 includes happy hour food and drink.  A second fundraiser will be held in February on comedy night at Governors pub, $10 a ticket, 2 drink minimum. Both fundraisers take place at local pubs.
